Course Overview

The commencement of the Legal Profession Uniform Law on 1 July 2015 introduced the requirement for persons to be appointed as an external examiner, that person must be a member of a class of persons as designated in Rule 65 of the Legal profession Uniform General Rules 2015 and have successfully completed a course of education approved by the Legal Services Council from time to time after consultation with the relevant designated local regulatory authority.

Course Outline

To be eligible to apply for accreditation you must be: 

• A member of CAANZ, or 
• A member of CPA Australia, or 
• A member of IPA,  

with a current certificate of Public Practice, or 

• A registered company auditor. 

Eligibility based on review of your registration entitles you to sit the course approved by the Legal Services Council and conducted by the Law Society of New South Wales. 

For eligible applicants:

• You will be required to attend a 2 half day online webinar
• After attending the webinar, you will be required to complete an online assessment within 2 weeks
• On successfully completing the course a certificate will be issued to confirm that the person named in the certificate is a designated person pursuant to Rule 65 of the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015 and is eligible to be appointed to a law practice as an External Examiner.

• Navigate the new Trust Lodgement Portal (commonly known as TLP).
• Appoint a trust coordinator.
• Appoint an authorised trust contact (if required).
• Lodge a Confirmation of Trust Money (commonly known as a Part A) and comply with your obligations under Rule 54 of the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015 (Uniform Rules)
• Lodge a Statement of Trust Money (commonly known as a Part B), ensure an external examiners report is completed and comply with your obligations under Section 155 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Uniform Law) (if required)

This eLearning module will provide key information about the new Trust Lodgement Portal (TLP) for the annual trust account reporting process (commonly known as Part A, Part B and External Examiner Report). The TLP has been designed to streamline and enhance the process of lodging your External Examiner Report.
